Radians
Tonstartssbandht (NYC)
RUN DMT (Baltimore)
and guest
$7
After being all countried out after Stampede we're throwing a good ol'fashioned garage rock show. Radians (aka Endangered Ape) are the newest Albertan garage-pop sensations this side of the Saskatchewan border. Tonstartssbandht are a straight ahead psych-rock duo with as much fuzz as a muppet's towel. RUN DMT are part of that whole "weird" experimental scene kids seem to get so excited about, and they have a new 7-inch to boot.
Thursday July 22nd
Seven Story Redhead 7-inch release
Pine Tarts
and guest
$10
As you may or may not have heard Seven Story Redhead took first prize in this year's Xposure contest on X92.9FM. That means these boys beat out every other local band to win and with good reason. Combining an appreciation for the late 70s British punk and mod movements, combined with a danceable pop senseability, Seven Story Redhead is a fun band to watch. Fresh off the press for this show will be their new 7-inch, available to you. The Pine Tarts also appreciate a good pop song but also have enough of a power-pop edge like The Buzzcocks and Husker Du.
Friday July 23rd
Fred Eaglesmith
and guest
$25
Fred Eaglesmith returns for a second show! If you were too busy during Stampede to catch'em, now is your chance!
Saturday July 24th
The Firmhandshake CD fundraiser
Acid Jac
The Fight
$10
Local blues and R&B dudes The Firmhandshake are throwing a party to raise some coin for their upcoming CD. For those looking for an original blues band that isn't comprised of old dudes at an open jam, this is it. Acid Jac has some serious nods to both 60s rock and roll (please note: not classic rock) as well as the blues that preceded it. The Fight are a new Edmonton band with members of 40 Theives and Lions for Sheep and refer to themselves as "rock and soul". This will definetely be one of the more "groovy" nights we have in July.
Friday July 30th
Apocalypse Scooter Rally with
Rich Hope and his Evil Doers
$10
If you've ever seen over a dozen vespas cruising together through the streets of our fair city, that's the Apocalypse Scooter Club. They're holding their annual rally (read: party with lots of scooters) at The Palomino. Don't worry, you don't need a scooter to attend. Entertainment provided by Mr.Rich Hope who does the dirty blues/rock thing (like say, The Pack A.D. and Black Keys) better than most people I can think of (see previous remark). A great night of rock and roll and imported Italian two-wheelers.
Saturday July 31st
The Ex-Boyfriends
The Neckers
The Throwaways
$10
To make you forget there's a month of summer left, we're going to knock you out with rock and roll. The Ex-Boyfriends juggernaut attack will be sure to do it. Occupying the same ground as Richard Hell, Television, MC5 and the like, they never even let you know, unless you're falling off whatever table they're dancing on. The Neckers have been around forever, example: I have a pink, youth large Necker's shirt from when I could still wear it. Sadly, I outgrew the colour pink. These guys are the perfect combo of garage rock volume and Beatles pop sensibility. Plus, they don't play many shows that often so you should neck while you can. The Throwaways are punk/power-pop outfit that must have raided mom and dad's record collection. Thanks mom and dad, because now we're benefitting from that.
Upstairs Shows are from 5-9 and free!
TBA
Smokin 45s Invitational every Thursday (after Stampede) from 7-10
